On October 2, Ireland will hold another referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, wrote Reuters. Irish voters rejected the EU Treaty in 2008, but now the Irish will vote again after some adjustments have been made and after Ireland has suffered a serious economic downturn. The Irish Constitution requires that all treaties must be put to a public referendum.
2.października Irlandia przeprowadzi kolejne referendum nad Traktatem Lizbońskim – poinformowała agencja Reutera. Irlandczycy odrzucili ten europejski traktat w 2008 roku, jednak teraz będą oni ponownie głosować po dokonanych kilku poprawkach i po tym, jak Irlandia ucierpiała z powodu poważnego spadku gospodarczego. Irlandzka konstytucja wymaga, by wszystkie traktaty były podejmowane poprzez publiczne referenda.
The referendum became possible, wrote Novinite.com, Bulgaria’s news agency, “after the EU Council Summit in Brussels in June, when the EU leaders agreed on a series of opt-outs for Ireland stating that the treaty will not change Ireland’s taxation, abortion laws or military neutrality.”

Opinion polls suggest the Lisbon treaty now has the support of a majority of voters who see the benefits of EU membership to help bring Ireland out of one of the deepest recessions in the industrialized world. “Many have pointed to the recent global economic downturn, which has struck Ireland with particular ferocity,” wrote Spiegel Online “as one significant reason for the country’s shift in public sentiment in favor of the treaty.”
